The New Hampshire Section Manager's challenge......

As many of you in NH know Bob Raiche, KA1BOB succumbed to cancer last year. Just recently, I learned that Chick Hunt, KC1OX one of Bob’s closest buddies and my friend for 20 years had been diagnosed by the same type of cancer as Bob. Many of our friend and family, perhaps even yours have been touched by cancer. Here is a way for you to help in a big way by donating a little bit of your time and radio skills for a very worthy cause. – Al - K1AKS.

The 27th Annual Prouty Bike Ride and Walk Challenge is Saturday, July 12, 2008. This event benefits the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon NH.

For many years now, local ham radio operators have provided health and safety communications for this fund raiser in the fight against Cancer. It is great fun, a very worthwhile cause and good practice for emergency communications training. Last year, The Prouty raised a record-breaking $1,750,000! This year the goal is to raise more than $2,000,000.

The funds are used to support cancer research and to help offset the costs of cancer treatments to those afflicted. The event includes 100 mile, 50 mile, and 25 mile bike rides thru NH and VT, with several walks, all beginning in Hanover, NH. For full details about The Prouty go to: www.theProuty.org

In past years, over 30 hams have been needed “to do it right.” As of now there is a shortage of operators.

To help, all you need is an interest. A ham ticket helps, experience is optional and equipment can be provided. You will be placed in a position commensurate with your experience.

Even though the Red Cross and medical persons will be participating, there are many situations that only ham radio can cover! A change in the route for safety, single lane places on the route. Over 13 rover vehicles, just to name a few, all to help provide a safe experience for the bikers and walkers...impressive YES !

Consider making this a family event for a worthy cause. Here is your chance to help make a difference in someone else's life by volunteering just a bit of your time.
